Dora-Sitkum Rural Fire Protection District Receives $20,000 from The Oregon Community Foundation Dora-Sitkum Rural Fire Protection District has been awarded $20,000 in grant funds from The Oregon Community Foundation to help the department remodel its community center and build a new fire station in Dora.
Dora, an unincorporated community, is located about 20 miles east of Myrtle Point near the East Fork of the Coquille River. John Sweet of Coos Bay, a Coos Bay volunteer representing The Oregon Community Foundation, toured the fire department’s building which was once the Dora School. The building now houses the Dora-Sitkum fire department, the Dora Library, the East Fork Community Church, and a cafeteria space used for community potlucks and pie socials. Then he presented a check to the fire department’s board of directors. During the presentation, Sweet said he remembered traveling from Bandon to Dora on twisty roads when he was a boy and getting carsick.
Sweet congratulated the board on raising almost a million dollars to pay for the construction project in Dora. “This is a great project, and The Oregon Community
Foundation is happy to be a part of it. I want to come back and take another tour when you finish the construction,” Sweet said. “At this point we are all itching to start the construction phase,” said Richard Kirk, Dora-Sitkum RFPD board chairman. “This generous grant from The Oregon Community Foundation brings us so close—some of us are strapping on nail bags and setting up sawhorses.”
Funding for the grant came from two funds managed by the Oregon Community Foundation: the Peter J. and Wilma Tashnovian Fund and the Van Evera and Janet M. Bailey Fund. The Oregon Community Foundation, established in 1973, has managed charitable funds donated by individuals, families, and businesses to enhance and support the quality of life in their communities. Today, the Foundation’s endowment consists of over 1160 funds with combined assets of $770 million. The Foundation makes grants through an application process that involves local citizens in the review and evaluation of requests for funds. Application materials are available through the foundation’s Portland office. Individuals or businesses interested in establishing a fund may contact the Eugene office at:
