Although autism is defined by a core set of behaviors, children exhibit many combinations of behaviors: Asperger’s Syndrome: Relatively good verbal language with milder non-verbal language issues; restricted range of interests and relatedness. Hyperlexia: Extreme fascination with letters (and numbers). learns letters by age 18-24 months, spells by 3 years and rote reading skills by age 5. Pervasive Development Disorder: Another term for Autism. PDD-NOS: Non-verbal language problems not meeting strict criteria for other PDD disorders. Rett’s Disorder: (rare disorder of girls) Deceleration of head growth between 5 & 48 months. Loss of acquired hand skills between 5 & 30 months; loss of social engagement; poor gait and impaired language development.
