AUTISM is often referred to as a spectrum disorder meaning that the symptoms and characteristics of autism can present themselves in a variety of combinations. Although autism is defined by a core set of behaviors, children exhibit many combinations of behaviors:


Asperger’s Syndrome:
Relatively good verbal language with milder non-verbal language issues; restricted range of interests and relatedness.

Hyperlexia:
Extreme fascination with letters (and numbers). learns letters by age 18-24 months, spells by 3 years and rote reading skills by age 5.

Pervasive Development Disorder:
Another term for Autism.

PDD-NOS:
Non-verbal language problems not meeting strict criteria for other PDD disorders.

Rett’s Disorder:
(rare disorder of girls) Deceleration of head growth between 5 & 48 months. Loss of acquired hand skills between 5 & 30 months; loss of social engagement; poor gait and impaired language development. Diagnosed through blood testing. www.rettsyndrome.org

Teaching Styles:
Teacch; Applied Behavior Analysis; Discrete Trials; Son Rise, Floor Play, etc.

Communication Therapy:
Speech and language therapy available through school system and/or private speech pathologist. See Speech/Language.

Dietary interventions:
Food Sensitivities and Allergies: 40% of all children w/autism have food allergies or sensitivities. Gluten Free and Casien Free diet (gfcfdiet.com); Feingold Diet; Candida/Yeast Elimination Diet; vitamins and supplements therapy (Kirkman Laboratories www.kirkmanlabs.com), etc.

Other Interventions:
Medications; Chiropractic; enzymes; hormones, etc..

Sensory, Mind and Body Therapies:
Sensory integration, relaxation therapies, auditory integration therapy, cranial sacral therapy, acupuncture, etc.
